Mental Health Skill-building Services (MHSS) is an intensive, home-based service that is designed to assist the client in obtaining independence or stability within the community. The program is available to older adolescents and adults who have long term mental health needs, cognitive deficiencies or dual diagnoses.

Our highly qualified staff are guided by a curriculum that focuses on 7 core competencies to promote independent living while managing mental health symptoms and needs.

Individual interventions may include:
  • Assessment of competency and adaptive functioning
  • Evaluation of mental health needs
  • Implementation of an Individualized Service Plan addressing identified needs
  • Up to 10 hours per week of home and community-based support
  • Assistance with accessing and navigating community resources
  • Advocacy within the medical, educational, social service and psychiatric systems
  • Psycho-education and skills-training to improve independent living
  • Frequent communication and collaboration with associated professionals and treatment team members
Who is eligible:
  • Youth ages 16+ working toward independence, are in need of life skills training and ongoing support due to their mental health issues
  • Adults who are in need of ongoing support and services to maintain independence or stability within the community due to their mental health diagnoses
  • Individuals who are willing to cooperate with their MHS worker and commit to at least 5 hours per week in the home or community to support the process of obtaining independence
